Let's understand the definition first.
CGreek (empatheia – empathy) – an understanding that has no rational explanation. The ability to comprehend the inner, emotional world of another. Accordingly, empath - is a person with a developed ability of empathy.
Why do I need empathy?
This is an absolutely necessary quality for working in the humanitarian or creative fields - all actors, psychologists, doctors, teachers, artists, businessmen, advertisers, marketers and many others need it.
It promotes the most effective interaction and communication between people, helps to understand other people, predict their behavior, and, therefore, more successfully achieve your goals. With the help of empathy, you can easily understand difficult interpersonal situations and find the best way out. When empathy is weak, you are completely at a loss about such situations - and act at random, which creates mistakes and complicates the situation even more, moving you away from success.
When you show empathy in your interactions with people, they feel comfortable communicating with you. You give the impression of a kind, pleasant and charming person who understands your interlocutor well.
Research shows that even plants can feel other people's pain. Both dogs and cats show empathy. That is why pet owners are less likely to experience stress both psychologically and physically, recover faster, and are less prone to depression.
There are four types of people based on their level of empathy.
1. Not empathetic people. They have given up their empathic abilities. Closed yourself off from receiving emotional information. Perhaps these abilities have completely atrophied because they were never used. They cannot recognize non-verbal and verbal emotional signals. Any ability you don't use will atrophy - that's obvious.
2. People with weak empathy. This is the majority of people. They have basic empathy skills, but they are unable to use them well, or when they do use them, they experience emotional overload. This happens when such a person is experiencing emotional stress or is in a crowded place. They are in a state of constant tension, as if all the emotions of the world, fears, problems have fallen on their shoulders. On a physical level, they feel headaches, fatigue, etc.
3. Empaths are functional. They easily adapt to any emotional information, can control their emotions, without suppressing them, with ease. There are not many such people.
4. Empaths are professionals. They easily recognize the most complex emotions hidden in the depths of someone else's soul. They are good at managing other people's emotions. They are good diagnosticians because they see information that is not obvious. There are only a few of them, and they are extremely rare. It also happens that a person is a good diagnostician, but poorly manages other people’s emotions. This does not mean manipulation, but the ability to lift your spirits and relieve pain. Even when you are in pain, in communication with such a person you will forget about your pain, believe in yourself.
If you find that empathy is not your strong suit and therefore your relationships or work suffer, you are unable to achieve professional success and advance in your career, don't be discouraged. Seek help from a psychotherapist and you can develop this useful ability together.
