What diseases does a psychotherapist treat

psyhelp 2A psychotherapist is a psychologist (or doctor) with a special psychotherapeutic education who treats mental problems up to moderate severity. Psychiatrists with drug treatment are already dealing with serious problems.

A psychotherapist without a medical education does not have the right to make a diagnosis or prescribe medications, but relies solely on conversational therapy.

Sometimes a psychiatrist may involve an additional psychotherapist, and then therapy will take place simultaneously under the supervision of a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist. This happens only if such “combined therapy” is recommended by a psychiatrist.

Directions of psychotherapy

Modern psychotherapy has hundreds of methods, of which the most popular

Psychoanalysis – the work is based on unconscious processes (defenses, motivation, instincts), this is a method of long-term therapy, the course can take several years.

psyhelp 3Gestaltapproach – it is based on the principles of self-regulation of the psyche and the ability to be aware. A shorter-term method, the work occurs mainly with emotions and the therapeutic field.

Existential approach – considers life holistically from a person’s connection with himself and others. Works especially well with meanings, but is also not a short-term method.

Positive psychotherapy – relies on basic resources hidden from a person’s awareness to overcome a problem. Short-term method of psychotherapy, on average 10 consultations per request. Allows you to integrate techniques from other methods.

Any of the above methods works with depression, neuroses, trauma, addictions, stress, anxiety, fears and of course problems in relationships and adaptation.

Psychotherapy techniques

psyhelp 1The main techniques are active listening and conversation, which helps to reveal the client's consciousness and unconscious mechanisms.

This unites all conversational types of psychotherapy. Of course, each method has its own unique tools, and the client has the right to choose the one that suits him.
And what exactly is suitable can be understood only by the results of the work experimentally.

All tools are divided into two types - those that work with consciousness and those that are more aimed at working with unconscious mechanisms.

For example, hypnosis and neurolinguistic programming work with the subconscious, and work with beliefs works with the conscious mind.

Not all methods allow the use of different techniques.

In the process of therapy, understanding (insight), relaxation (elimination of tension) and catharsis (relief of emotions) occur, and thus coping appears (that is, the ability to withstand the problem and cope with it).
